Embedded steel anchorage for bridge load transfer

Support anchor plate, also called bearing embedded steel plate, expansion joint base plate or pier anchorage plate, is embedded before concrete pouring at cap beams, abutments, box girders and pier tops.

It is usually made from a main steel plate and welded anchor bars. After concrete curing, bearings, expansion joint steel profiles, anti-falling blocks, guardrail posts or other bridge components can be welded or fixed to the plate.

Load Distribution

The steel base plate spreads concentrated bearing or expansion joint loads into a larger concrete area, reducing local cracking and crushing at pier tops and cap beams.

Permanent Anchorage

HRB400 ribbed anchor bars are welded to the back of the plate and embedded into concrete, creating strong mechanical bonding against vibration and long-term movement.

Structure and Materials

Main plate, anchor bars and optional reinforcement ribs

The load-bearing main plate can be made from Q235B carbon steel for regular municipal bridges or Q355B high-strength low-alloy steel for heavy-load bridges and large-tonnage pot bearings.

Anchor bars are commonly HRB400 ribbed steel bars with welded joints. Plate thickness and bar diameter are selected according to drawings, bearing load and installation position.

Common plate sizes include 200x200, 250x250, 300x300, 400x400, 500x500 and 600x600 mm. Plate thickness can be selected from 12, 16, 20, 25 or 30 mm according to load level.

Anchor bar diameter is commonly 12-25 mm, with length and bending form customized for concrete depth and anchorage requirements.

Example shown: 300x300x8 mm plate, steel bar diameter 12 mm, approximate inner width 190 mm. Final tolerance and dimensions should follow the project drawing.

Construction Process

Prefabricated welding for faster and more stable site installation

Anchor plates are produced according to drawings, welded with anchor bars, treated for corrosion protection and then positioned in the reinforcement cage before concrete pouring.

During pouring, concrete should be fully vibrated around the anchor bars to avoid honeycomb and voids. After curing, the plate surface is cleaned before welding or fixing bearings and expansion joint components.
